Mazda MX-30 vs Kia Soul EV: verdict and specifications

The Mazda MX-30 is desirable, but the Kia Soul EV is a much more sensible choice overall

As can so often be the case with electric cars, our recommendation is based largely on range and the flexibility that comes with having more of it. Both on paper and in our cold-weather real-world testing, the Kia offered more driving miles per charge than the Mazda.

That's not to say the MX-30 should be discounted, however – there are benefits to a smaller battery, including savings on weight, charging time and environmental impact. If you can live with less range, don't need as much space for passengers and simply love the way the Mazda looks (as we do), it's still a great choice.

1st: Kia Soul EV

The Kia has a bigger battery and therefore a longer range than its Mazda rival. It also boasts faster charging, superior efficiency and a more comprehensive warranty. It costs more to buy like-for-like, but is hard not to recommend – especially if you need a small family SUV rather than an urban runabout. It's not as stylish, nor as much fun to drive, as the Mazda, but you're unlikely to be disappointed with the Soul EV.

2nd: Mazda MX-30

The Mazda's small battery holds it back in this company – rather than a fully fledged family SUV, it's best considered as a shorter-distance runabout. This will suit plenty of buyers, however – especially those with good access to chargers at either end of their typical journeys. It looks fantastic, drives sweetly and has a very slick interior – but the Soul EV is the more flexible car.
