The Ioniq 5 was crash-tested by Euro NCAP in late 2021, hitting the maximum five-star score, so safety is assured. We don't yet have a lot of independent reliability data from owners, however strong showings by other Hyundai models in customer surveys bode well and electric cars in general tend to be very reliable.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 reliability & problems

Electric-car reliability is generally superior to that of combustion-engined equivalents, due to cars of this type having fewer moving parts and therefore less to go wrong in the first place. Additional reassurance comes from Hyundai's generous five-year/unlimited-mileage warranty and the strong performance of the Hyundai Kona (including its fully electric derivative) in the 2021 and 2022 Driver Power customer-satisfaction surveys. Hyundai itself also finished 11th on the list of the 29 best car manufacturers.

Safety

The independent experts at Euro NCAP evaluated the Ioniq 5's safety credentials in late 2021 and awarded it their top five-star score. Other Hyundai models, including the Kona, NEXO and Santa Fe SUVs, and the i30 and Ioniq hatchbacks, have previously recorded the same result. Individual category scores for the Ioniq were 88% for adult occupant protection, 86% for child occupant protection and 88% for safety assistance systems.

On the safety kit front, the Ioniq 5 gets a full complement of airbags, a forward collision avoidance system, 'highway drive assist' cruise control, hill-start assistance, an intelligent speed limiter, ISOFIX child-seat points front and rear, lane-following assistance, lane-keeping assistance and tyre-pressure monitoring as standard. Stepping up to Premium or Ultimate spec from the entry-level SE Connect adds blind-spot collision avoidance and an enhanced level of 'highway drive assist' semi-autonomous driving capability.
